Originally written for the composer’s very musical daughter, who inspired this light-hearted Ragtime piece, written with the needs of middle school string students in mind. It’s a fun tune that offers a lot of teaching opportunities, including roadmap, C#s, spiccatto, and moving across the common string keys. A great addition to your next concert!
Coast Highway (A Warm and Breezy Drive) explores pop-style string techniques in the style of movie and television themes of the 1950s-60s. It was written as a fun challenge for for an advanced middle school orchestra, and is a guaranteed hit with audiences of all ages! For your string players they get to use finger slides, and for your wind players this piece scales from string orchestra and percussion, to strings and saxophones, all the way to full orchestra. And for everyone solo changes are provided, making this a great way to teach and show off improvisation for your entire group!

Inspired by the “Society Band” dance orchestras of early 20th Century America, Ragtime Ragtop (A Tin Lizzie Drive) depicts taking the old Model-T out for an afternoon drive. From cranking the motor to a chugging start, cruising down the backroads, and the final screeching halt, this novelty piece is sure to please audiences with the sound images of what Happy Motoring was like in the early days of the automobile. It utilizes new techniques for your strings, including col legno bouncing of the bow and screechy behind the bridge playing, along with a lot of fun percussion effects.
This piece is written in flex style; it will work with just strings and percussion, but is best as a full orchestra piece.
Reflessione Dolce translates from Italian as “Sweet Reflections”. It is the imaginings of past loves lost, and the times that made them such sweet memories. This wonderful ballad is written to take advantage of a particularly good middle school cello and violin section, and designed to develop fluidity and sensitivity as well as demonstrative, romantic phrase shaping. A great addition for your next concert.
Spit & Polish is a great grade 2 march by David Yamamoto! It celebrates graduation from military basic training, honoring the American services tradition with a piece that student musicians completing the school year from their own basic training (beginning or intermediate band) can navigate with pride. Along the way there are great teaching opportunities about marches, including form, key change, and an easy introduction to cut time
Tango Jose Moises is an unusual duet inspired by a pair of good friends from the composer’s school who had both won lead seats in the Norwalk-La Mirada (California) District Middle School Honor Band: Jose on tuba and Moises on clarinet. This humorous tango was written so they could publicly celebrate their achievement and display their skills at their final middle school concert
